How to Clean Hard Water Stains on Glass Shower Doors

How to remove hard water spots from a glass shower door — why they come back, what dissolves them, and when the glass is actually etched and cannot be saved.

A glass shower door that has gone permanently cloudy is one of the most common complaints we hear in Florida homes, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. People scrub harder and buy stronger products when the actual issue is that they are using the wrong kind of cleaner — or, in some cases, that the glass is already damaged and no cleaner on earth will fix it.

The short answer

  • The spots are mineral deposits left when hard water evaporates. Much of Florida has hard water.
  • Minerals dissolve in acid, not in detergent. That is why regular bathroom spray does nothing.
  • If it does not come off with a proper descaler, the glass may be etched — permanently.
  • A squeegee after every shower is the only thing that actually prevents it.

Why your normal cleaner does not touch it

Most all-purpose and bathroom cleaners are detergents — they are built to lift grease and soap. Hard water spotting is calcium and magnesium left behind when a droplet evaporates. Detergent does not dissolve mineral; acid does. This is why people conclude the stain is permanent when really they have never used a product capable of removing it.

What to do

  • Work on dry glass so the product is not immediately diluted.
  • Use a descaling or lime-and-scale bathroom cleaner and give it the dwell time on the label. This is a chemistry job, not a muscle job.
  • Agitate gently with a non-scratch pad, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a squeegee and a microfibre.
  • Heavily built-up doors often need two rounds. Two gentle rounds beat one aggressive one.

How to tell if the glass is etched

Etching is when minerals have chemically eaten into the surface of the glass rather than sitting on it. The test: after a proper descaling treatment and a full dry, wet the glass again. If the cloudiness disappears while wet and returns as it dries, the surface is damaged, not dirty. Etched glass can sometimes be improved by a professional glass polishing service, but no household cleaner will restore it — and that is worth knowing before you spend another three Saturdays on it.

Preventing it, which is the real answer

  • Squeegee the glass after every single shower. It takes fifteen seconds and it is the difference between clear glass and a permanent problem.
  • Dry the frame and the bottom track too — that is where deposit builds thickest and where corrosion starts.
  • Ventilate so the enclosure dries out rather than staying damp.
  • A water softener addresses the cause rather than the symptom, if hard water is affecting your fixtures throughout the house.

If it is beyond a Saturday

Glass, tracks and hardware are part of a Captain Duster deep clean. We work across the Treasure Coast and Space Coast with the same crew each visit and a written, guaranteed price before we start — and if the glass turns out to be etched, we will tell you that instead of charging you to scrub something that cannot come clean.
